Abstract

This lecture will focus on enzymatic methyl transfer reactions involving vitamin B12 (cobalamin)- and nickel-containing enzymes. Studies over the past decade have uncovered novel reactions in which low valent metal centers act as nucleophiles to initiate the formation of organometallic alkyl-metal species. In addition, these metalloenzymes are regulated by redox state and perform formidable conformational changes during the catalytic cycle.
