Abstract

The first cyber-enabled collaborative graduate course in neutron science centrally coordinated by NScD and JINS at ORNL was launched on September 4th, 2012. The full semester course has so far drawn more than 110 PhD students, scientists and faculty nationally and internationally. It is taught collaboratively by expert professors from six contributing universities (University of Tennessee, Johns Hopkins University, MIT, Indiana University, University of Virginia, and UC San Diego) as well as ORNL scientists. The course provides a solid foundation to understand the use of neutron scattering as a probe of atomic-scale structure and dynamics of quantum condensed matter. The course covers the theoretical background, experimental techniques and methods of analysis and aims to attract young scientists and train them in the fundamentals of neutron scattering research.

The course is taught from the lecturers' institutions and is available live at the participating universities as well as on line for all registrants. The registration for the course is free online via the following URL:

All lecture sessions are being recorded and made freely available via streaming from the QCMP course resources page, so registrants can follow or revisit the lectures at any time. Aside from lecture notes and slides, homework problems are posted also, and a few weeks later, the solutions to the problems are made available on line.
