Buchanan named associate director of ORNL's Life Sciences Division

Dr. Michelle Buchanan has been named associate director of the Life Sciences Division of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Buchanan was previously group leader in the Analytical Chemistry Division, working in the area of spectrometry. Her new position will find her developing a program that includes functional genomics, structural biology and relevant analytical technologies. She will also strengthen links between ORNL's Life Sciences and Analytical Chemistry divisions.
Buchanan, who joined ORNL in 1978, holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Kansas and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. She has provided scientific leadership in mass spectrometry research with particular emphasis on biological and environmental applications. She has authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific publications, holds two patents and was awarded the R&D 100 Award by R&D magazine in 1986.
She and her husband, A.C., live in West Knoxville, Tenn., with their daughter, Lauren.
ORNL is a DOE multiprogram research facility and is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
