Audio Spot: UT-Battelle assists in creating East Tennessee jobs

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., May 20, 2005 — An effort to create new economic opportunities in Tennessee is the goal of a job creation program engineered by UT-Battelle and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Alex Fischer, director of ORNL's Technology Transfer and Economic Development Directorate, said the laboratory has helped create 56 companies during the past five years.

"Those companies have employed hundreds of people and literally made tens of millions of dollars of capital investment," Fischer said. "Beyond that, we have been very active in regional and statewide economic development strategies."

Fischer said creating new job opportunities across Tennessee is an important mission for the laboratory.

"Our efforts have been to leverage Oak Ridge National Laboratory and our technology resources as an economic driver," Fischer said. "At the end of the day, the questions we ask are how can we translate our technology into new companies and jobs."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
