UT Coach Bruce Pearl tips off ORNL United Way campaign

University of Tennessee men’s basketball Coach Bruce Pearl tipped off Oak Ridge National Laboratory's United Way campaign on August 20.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Aug. 20, 2007 — University of Tennessee men's basketball Coach Bruce Pearl tipped off Oak Ridge National Laboratory's United Way campaign Monday.

In his speech to the crowd of ORNL staff, Pearl talked about how United Way-funded organizations such as the Boys Club have helped provide a bridge to young people pursuing the dream of attending college.

"Conversations that I would have would be something like this: 'Coach, if it wasn't for the Boys and Girls Club, if it wasn't for a place where I could go after school and be safe and challenged, where there was something expected of them, more than staying out of trouble, but actually to learn to get on a computer and learn to do the things that need to be done,'" Pearl said.

Pearl noted United Way provides help and assistance - not a handout - to those in need.

"That's what the United Way does so well in all of its social services," Pearl said. "They bridge the gap when people are in between and terrifically in need."

The event also featured a final shoot-out of an eight-day ORNL free throw competition which made $2,242.91 toward this year's $825,000 United Way campaign goal.

Winner of the contest was Tom King of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program. King also won the free-throw contest two years ago, when he outshot, among others, Lady Vol All-America Candace Parker.

The theme for this year's drive is "Extraordinary giving by Extraordinary people." The campaign is chaired by Karen Downer and co-chaired by Jimmy Stone.

Other projects, including an agency fair, two book fairs, Lifestyle Discounts book sales and the International Festival in September, will offer additional opportunities to support this year's United Way campaign.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
