Audio Spot: Battelle CEO praises relationship with University of Tennessee
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.,
Jan. 25, 2008
Battelle President and CEO Carl Kohrt says his organization and the University of Tennessee enjoy a strong working relationship in managing Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy.
"Of the seven laboratories and relationships that we have, this is by far the best," Kohrt says. "This is the model. We have a shared vision. Battelle brings knowledge of how to manage large and complex facilities. The University of Tennessee brings certainly the relationship with the local and the political environment, but also the intellectual capacity for the university to have joint ventures, to help assess and direct the science."
Kohrt says the seven-year modernization effort at Oak Ridge has gone beyond expectations.
"They've done it with quality, ingenuity, generally below cost, ahead of the schedule," Kohrt says. "Being able to take complex things - whether it be building the Spallation Neutron Source or discovering new materials - Oak Ridge seems to have momentum, confidence that is unsurpassed."
Kohrt visited Oak Ridge to attend the UT-Battelle board meeting.
