UT-Battelle employees increase efforts to help communities
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.,
Dec. 21, 2009
More than 800 employees of UT-Battelle have provided volunteer time to community service projects in East Tennessee during 2009.
Team UT-Battelle’s Angel Tree program had 35 UT-Battelle employees purchasing gifts for 281 needy East Tennessee children this Christmas. Among those employees participating were, from left, Phil Stuart, Jan Thomas and Heather Williams – all with Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Laboratory Protection Division.
The employees, working under the Team UT-Battelle banner, have contributed their time and effort to 31 projects this year, accumulating more than 2.500 hours of service.
Team UT-Battelle is a volunteer-service support concept, with a purpose of helping Oak Ridge National Laboratory's employees lend their services to community projects.
"Team UT-Battelle volunteers support our commitment to community outreach at Oak Ridge National Laboratory," ORNL Director Thom Mason said. "Through their efforts on these projects, they are helping to make East Tennessee a better place to live and work."
Highlighting this year's Team UT-Battelle activity was a group of employees working at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory that walked and raised money for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in October in Knoxville. Team UT-Battelle provided the largest corporate team in the walk that raises money and awareness in the battle against breast cancer.
Other large Team UT-Battelle activities included groups walking in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the March of Dimes and Juvenile Diabetes Walk, Aid to Distressed Families of Anderson County and the Memory Walk.
During this Christmas season, about 40 UT-Battelle employees have contributed to the Angel Tree program that provides toys to underprivileged youngsters in East Tennessee.
