Researchers collect data from Yellowstone's Obsidian Pool during fire season

Top from left: ORNL researcher Mircea Podar, University of Tennessee (UT) graduate student Carolyn Swift, and UT postdoctoral researcher Louie Wurch. Bottom from left: Fire consultant Lee Freeman, Wurch, and Swift.
ORNL and UT researchers were at Yellowstone National Park recently as part of an archaea diversity study led by ORNL's Mircea Podar. Part of the research involved taking samples from a thermal pool with evolutionary and biotechnological implications. Lee Freeman, a fire consultant, accompanied the group as part of a Yellowstone National Park service requirement because there was a fire in the area. Podar said the samples from Obsidian Pool will be used for the bionenergy progam and for their research projects on archaea, single-celled microorganisms. [September 2013]
