  • Materials - Less costly carbon fiber
    June 03, 2014 - A newly patented system that uses microwave energy could greatly reduce the cost of producing carbon fiber from polymer precursors while cutting the amount of effluent gases. The technology, invented by a team that includes Felix Paulauskas of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, consists of an elongated atmosphere-controlled chamber in which the material undergoes complete carbonization.

Delaire's proposal wins DOE Early Career Research Award

Olivier Delaire, a staff scientist in the Scattering & Thermophysics group in the Materials Science & Technology Division , has been selected to receive a DOE Office of Science Early Career Award. The Early Career Research program seeks to bolster the U.S. scientific workforce by supporting exceptional researchers during the early stages of their careers. Olivier is one of 35 scientists selected from across the United States for the highly competitive award, which attracted 750 proposals reviewed, including 17 from DOE's national laboratories and 18 from U.S. universities. His proposal, "Quasiparticle Couplings in Transport of Heat, Charge, and Spin for Novel Energy Materials," will earn a grant of at least $500,000 for salary plus research expenses over five years.
