  • Vehicle Technologies Office cites Davis, Qu, Wereszczak, ORNL Today, July 7, 2014 - Three ORNL researchers recently received honors from the DOE Vehicle Technologies Office for their sustainable transportation work. ETSD's Stacy Davis received a DOE VTO Special Recognition Award for providing consistently high-quality data in the Transportation Energy Data Book, the Vehicle Technologies Market Report, and the Vehicle Technologies Fact of the Week. MSTD's Jun Qu and Andy Wereszczak received VTO R&D Awards. Qu was honored for developing ionic liquids as novel engine lubricants, and Wereszczak received recognition for his cross-cutting research in materials and power electronics.

  • Varela receives Microscopy Society's Burton Medal - ORNL Today, August 13, 2014 - Maria Varela, a researcher in the Materials S&T Division's Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy group,, has received the Microscopy Society of America's Burton Medal for early career scientists.
  • Hispanic Engineers recognize Idrobo (ORNL Today Aug. 4, 2014) (Knoxblogs.com)- Juan Carlos Idrobo has been recognized by the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award Corp. with the 2014 Outstanding Achievement Award for groundbreaking research in scanning transmission electron microscopy of 2D materials. Juan Carlos works in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences' Microscopy group.
  • ASM International elects Pint fellow (ORNL Today Aug. 4, 2014) - Bruce Pint was cited for "groundbreaking contributions to the fundamental knowledge of high temperature oxidation mechanisms in alloys and coatings, and for contributions to heat resistant alloy design and development through the incorporation of minor elements to control and improve high temperature stability and overall oxidation resistance." Bruce, who is deputy program manager of the ORNL Fossil Energy Materials program, is also a fellow of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 technical publications and has been cited over 5,000 times.
  • ORNL wins eight R&D 100s - OAK RIDGE, Tenn., July 11, 2014--Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have received eight R&D 100 awards, presented by R&D Magazine in recognition of the year’s top technological innovations. Ionic Liquid Anti-wear Additives for Fuel-efficient Engine Lubricantswas developed by ORNL, General Motors Research and Development Center, Shell Global Solutions and Lubrizol Corp. ORNL principal investigators were Jun Qu, Huimin Luo, Sheng Dai, Peter Blau, Todd Toops, Brian West and Bruce Bunting; and Super-hydro-tunable HiPAS Membraneswere developed by ORNL. Inventors were Michael Hu, Matthew Sturgeon, Ramesh Bhave, Brian Bischoff, Tolga Aytug and Tim Theiss.

  • Materials - Less costly carbon fiber
    June 03, 2014 - A newly patented system that uses microwave energy could greatly reduce the cost of producing carbon fiber from polymer precursors while cutting the amount of effluent gases. The technology, invented by a team that includes Felix Paulauskas of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, consists of an elongated atmosphere-controlled chamber in which the material undergoes complete carbonization.

Formed on March 1, 2006 from a merger of the former Condensed Matter Sciences and Metals & Ceramics Divisions, the Materials Science and Technology Division conducts fundamental and applied materials research for basic energy sciences programs and a variety of energy technologies, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, conservation, fossil energy, fusion energy, nuclear power, and space exploration. Basic and applied research programs are focused on the thrust areas of

  • theory and modeling at multiple scales,
  • designed synthesis of condensed matter physics systems, alloys, structural ceramics, and specialized crystals,
  • structural characterization via electron, ion, photon and neutron sciences,
  • comprehensive physical and mechanical property characterization,
  • interaction with extreme environments (temperature, corrosive media, radiation), and
  • applied materials physics (superconductivity, thermoelectrics, hydrogen storage, photovoltaics, catalysis, energy storage)

The MST division is a matrix organization made up of 19 research & development groups, three program offices, and two major user facilities. MST division research staff have strong interactions with the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences and the neutron scattering facilities located at the High Flux Isotopes Reactor Center for Neutron Scattering and the Spallation Neutron Source.

The MST division mission is to conduct basic and applied research and development on materials in order to improve the understanding of physical phenomena and to develop advanced materials and processes to enable energy-efficient, cost-competitive and environmentally acceptable materials technologies for a variety of important national priorities.

We perform this work for numerous government programs as well as in support of industry needs. We also enhance science education and improve scientific awareness of students from precollege to postdoc levels through a variety of intern and postgraduate programs.
