Research Interests:

Thomas R. Muth  has a 28 year career converting difficult to process metals into useful forms for  performance advantage, strategic advantage, and profit in the nuclear, defense, transportation, consumer electronic, medical, and chemical industry.  Mr. Muth has supervised operations personnel as well as operated equipment for vacuum and controlled atmosphere melting of steels, stainless steels, lead alloys, nickel alloys, uranium alloys, aluminum alloys and beryllium alloys.  He has also supervised personnel and operated equipment to convert to desired configuration metals and alloys of titanium, titanium aluminides, titanium composites, aluminum / aluminum composites, beryllium, uranium, steels, superalloys, tantalum, niobium, molybdenum, copper, and silver via rolling, pressing, welding, and machining, under rigorous quality assurance circumstances. Converting these difficult to process materials into an intermediate or final product in cooperation with a customer need has been the impetus of the multi-materials processing efforts. Mr. Muth’s current efforts at ORNL are to strengthen the understanding and expand the use of titanium powder metallurgy components, made from particulate titanium emanating from new reduction technologies.
