Dr. Nunn joined ORNL in 1991 after completing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to that, he was a member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, NM and also worked as an engineer at the General Electric Company. Dr. Nunn has over 30 years of experience in the development and testing of ceramic materials, including structural, piezoelectric, and ionic conducting ceramics. He was involved extensively in the development of the gelcasting process for forming ceramic components and he has been a principal investigator on nine CRADAs with industrial partners to utilize gelcasting for commercial applications. His recent work has included improving the performance of lightweight ballistic armor and developing processing techniques for fabricating components from Ti metal powders. Dr. Nunn received R&D 100 awards in 1999 and 2007, has over 30 technical publications, and holds 5 patents. He is a member of The American Ceramic Society and ASM International.
