Dr. Yin joined the Materials Processing & Manufacturing Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as a Post-doc researcher in September 2010. Currently he is focusing on the solidification microstructure evolution of cast iron, specializing on ductile cast iron. Ductile iron is much easier to cast than steel but with similar properties, and it will become a highly engineered material. Prediction of microstructure and mechanical properties will be a strong interest. Dr. Hebi Yin received his Ph.D. and B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State University (MSU) and Materials Science and Engineering at Dalian University of Technology (DUT), China. He studied the heat transfer, fluid flow, and dendrite growth during Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) process at MSU and thermal-mechanical behavior of solidified shell of continuous casting at DUT.

Research Interests:

Dr. Hebi Yin’s research interests include, but not limited to, the multi-scale solidification microstructure evolution modeling (coupled finite element or lattice Boltzmann method with cellular automata technique); multi-physics modeling (coupled thermal-mechanical fields); transport phenomena (heat and solute) by diffusion and convection with finite element and Lattice Boltzmann methods; Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) process; continuous casting; cast iron; and thermodynamics.
