During Fall 2003 the 8x8-ft Tri-Chord wall section was constructed and tested at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Buildings Technology Center (ORNL BTC). Tri-Chord stud system utilizes patented triangular shape of steel columns connected by perforated web.
The 8x8-ft section of Tri-Chord wall was constructed using 3.5-in. 20 gauge Tri-Chord studs installed at 24-in. on center. Conventional, full web C-shape steel profiles (20-gauge) were utilized for top and bottom tracks. The wall cavity was insulated using mineral wool batts (Rock Wool Manufacturing Company – Leeds, AL ). Thermal resistivity of this material is R-4.17 per in. Exterior wall sheathing was 7/16-in. Orientated Strand Board (OSB) and interior wall sheathing was made using 5/8-in. Type-X gypsum board.
