Computers are a pervasie part of modern science. We are learning how to use computers in all their glory.

• Computers that control devices (HTML electron microscopes)
• Computers that gather and analyze data (SNS, HTML)
• Computers that solve problems. We learned hopw to program in Java and SQL and solved a real scientific problem.

We also learned how to be secure while using computers including using cryptography to protect data confidentiality and integrity, and how to keep our computers secure. We saw a demo of how fully patched computers get hacked.

Finally we learned when it is appropriate to use a supercomputer, and some of the tools necessary to do so.
