Feed-in tariffs (FiTs) are driving renewable energy development worldwide. Now they are stimulating clean energy investment in North America, too. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory is examining these complex policies in a series of technical reports by the Laboratory's Strategic Energy Analysis and Applications Center. Two reports are completed and a third report on best practices will be available later this year. NREL analysts have identified key factors in successful FiT programs, including regulatory stability, long-term year contracts so investors can recover their project costs, adequate energy rates, flexible plans according to project size and renewable resources and streamlined government approvals.
