SNS gets a new target
After three years of service,
the
Spallation Neutron
Source's
target
module has
been
replaced
after
exceeding all expectation
of
service life.
Having outlasted all predictions of when it would wear out, the original target module for the Spallation Neutron Source at DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory was finally changed in July. SNS operators took advantage of a planned maintenance outage to replace the old target, which has been in service since the SNS's startup on April 28, 2006. Meanwhile, users are "ecstatic" with results from experiments, even as the SNS ramps up to full power.
