Roberto has directed the Solid State Division, one of the Lab’s most prolific in terms of awards and publications, since 1990. He also chaired the ORNL Reengineering Steering Committee in 1996 and was the Lab’s manager of the year in 1997. He came to ORNL from Cornell University in 1974.
Ball spent most of his career in the Physics Division doing research on nuclear structure. He led the construction of the Holifield Heavy Ion Facility, later serving as its director, and directed the Physics Division from 1983 to 1994, when he was named deputy associate laboratory director for Advanced Materials, Physical, and Neutron Sciences in 1994. He became associate director AMPNS in 1997.
Ball also directed the SAP Delta project from 1996 to 1997 and has served on the external advisory committees for Brookhaven National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as chair of the Division of Nuclear Physics of the American Physical Society, and as a member of the DOE/National Science Foundation Nuclear Sciences Advisory Committee.
