Record of decision: SNS at Oak Ridge
For the record: The Spallation Neutron Source will be built at Oak Ridge. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson on June 23 issued the final approval of a DOE record of decision to construct and operate the SNS at the department’s preferred site, ORNL.

“It’s official,” said Secretary Richardson. “My choice of Oak Ridge as the site for the SNS follows a thorough environmental review of the project. This completes another step on the path to making a world-class facility available for the research of the next century.”

The SNS completion date is set at late 2005. The SNS Record of Decision is based on the SNS Final Environmental Impact Statement issued on April 15. FY 2000 construction startup funding is currently being considered in Congress.
