Research Experience and Interests

Nicholas is an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and holds a joint affiliation with ORNL.  His main interests are in Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and demography, but focuses on demographic and small area estimation, with special interest on uncertainty and spatial statistics.  Nicholas research is being funded by the National Science Foundation and the US Census Bureau to develop new techniques for estimating high resolution population data, to improve the accuracy and precision of government surveys, and to research the role of visualization on the human cognition of uncertainty in spatial data.  Other research being conducted by Nicholas explores and advances the roles of high resolution data for health studies, especially for measuring health care access and food security.
