Research Experience and Interests

Mr. Whitehead joined the Geographic Information Science and Technology Group in June of 2009 as a post bachelors research associate after graduating from UNC-CH. While at UNC-CH, Mr. Whitehead worked with the Town of Highlands, NC and the Highlands Biological Station.  He conducted an in depth watershed analysis to create a new perennial streams map for the Town of Highlands and help change the steam buffer ordinance.  He also worked with a team from Highlands Biological Station studying canopy gap analysis and the effects of forest composition do to the Hemlock lose.

While working with the GIST group, Mr. Whitehead completed his Professional Science Masters in Geospatial Information Science and Technology through NCSU. His work with NCSU was primarily focused on business management in science. He worked with WakeMed  to establish a community health asset database and developed a- in house web mapping application to promote and assist with policy and environmental change initiatives to benefit the wellbeing of Wake County residents. Upon completion of his MGIST, Mr. Whitehead took a post masters research associate position with the GIST group.

Mr. Whitehead works primarily on data creation and management efforts for the LandScan USA model inputs and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency's (NGA) Homeland Security Infrastructure Program (HSIP) efforts. He engages in database management and python scripting to assist in various geospatial tasks. He has also worked with the Environmental Science Division at Oak Ridge to do in depth sea level rise impact research. He also has an active role in QA for the Chemical Security Assesment Tool (CSAT).

Mr. Whitehead’s area of focus and interests are database design and management, web mapping applications, data creation and QA, and computer programing to streamline geospatial tasks.
