Snapshot from a first principles (ab initio) molecular dynamics calculation demonstrating reactions and breakup of ethylene carbonate and LiPF6 salt at a prototype carbon anode. These and related reactions are responsible for the formation of the solid-electrolyte interphase in rechargeable lithium ion batteries. We seek to understand this material and it's formation mechanisms to enable optimization of lithium ion batteries through reduced capacity loss (longer lifetime) and enhanced rate capability.
